EPA's Asbestos Project Plan

The Asbestos Project Plan brings together all of EPA's current actions relating to asbestos. It provides a framework for a coordinated Agency-wide approach to identify, evaluate and reduce risk to human health from asbestos exposure. EPA has identified three key areas where it will focus its asbestos research, program, and funding activities:

1) Improving the state of the science for asbestos. This involves activities to advance EPA's understanding of asbestos toxicology, asbestos-related exposures, sample collection and analysis and applied science in the field.

2) Identifying and addressing ways people are exposed to asbestos in products, schools and buildings, and potential ways to reduce exposure; and

3) Assessing and reducing risks associated with areas that require asbestos cleanup.

The Asbestos Project Plan provides an overview of EPA's asbestos activities for EPA's federal, state, and local government partners and other interested stakeholders. Detailed information and guidance about specific asbestos issues, such as complying with regulations relating to asbestos in schools and the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, can be also be found on the Agency's asbestos web site. 	Asbestos record keeping standards are set for Building & Facility OWNERS Building and facility owners also are required to maintain records about the presence, quantity of asbestos-containing material and presumed asbestos-containing material in the building and/or facility. These records must be kept for duration of ownership and must be transferred to the successive owners.
